The Kayak Launch is an award-winning park structure, consisting of a picnic pavilion with restrooms, kayak and canoe storage, a small maintenance building, a floating dock kayak launch access into the Gordon River, and a bridge to cross the river into a planned county park and greenway. The park would provide an opportunity for visitors and residents to connect with nature and encourage exercise in a beautiful natural setting.
The materials in the project consist of wood, metals, and concrete, providing a naturalistic feel in the ecologically dynamic setting. The open-air pavilion will utilize natural passive cooling methods to provide air circulation and adequate shade. The design of the site incorporates filter marshes that remove pollutants from runoff water before it is discharged into the Gordon River, while collected rainwater would be utilized for non-potable toilet use. The building and adjacent parking lot are located to minimally affect the existing site conditions.
