The Oase Health Club is an addition and renovation to an existing 120,000 square-foot fitness center located in Bochum, Germany. The existing pre-engineered, two-story warehouse had poor curb appeal, inadequate signage, functional shortcomings, and was not competing effectively with newer fitness centers opening in the same area.
The most visible design changes occurred on the front façade of Oase and significantly improved its visibility and readability as a fitness center. A non-traditional curtain wall system, supported by structural glass rather than hollow metal, created a “cinematic space” along the façade and enabled fitness activities to be showcased to the public outside. Additional work on the exterior included creating an advertising wall that incorporates temporary Diazo technology, typically used on the windows of public buses, and enables the club to put up and take down displays with relative ease. The wall also serves to separate guest and member parking, an important design goal of the club.
